WQP What is IUVA? Give us a brief overview of the association.
James Bolton: The International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) was formed in 1999 as a non-profit association to represent scientists, engineers, students, consultants, UV companies and any others with an interest in applications of UV technologies. We currently have about 700 members from 35 countries around the world. IUVA sponsors conferences and workshops, including a biennial “UV Congress.” The last one was held in May 2005 in Whistler, BC, Canada. The “Public Zone” of the IUVA website (www.iuva.org) provides valuable UV information to the general public, such as a UV Buyer’s Guide, news, industry announcements, FAQs and upcoming meetings. It is easy to join IUVA online at https://secure.nelixstore.com/iuva/ memberapp/index.asp.
WQP What are some of the main benefits of IUVA’s membership?
Bolton: IUVA Members receive the quarterly IUVA News ultraviolet magazine containing UV news and interesting articles on UV subjects. Also, they have access (through a login and password) to the “Member Zone” of the IUVA website, which contains abundant UV information, such as an extensive list of UV references and patents, UV regulations around the world and UV protocols. Finally, IUVA members receive discounts on fees for IUVA sponsored conferences, workshops and publications. IUVA corporate members receive discounts on advertising in IUVA News and exhibit fees for conferences and workshops. In addition, they are listed (with links to their websites) on the “Corporate Links” page on the IUVA website.
WQP What are some of IUVA’s initiatives in 2005 and plans for 2006?
Bolton: The IUVA website lists IUVA sponsored events, such as the first Mid-East Conference on UV Technologies in Israel (Nov. 20–22, 2005). In addition, we are planning conferences in China and India and workshops in North America.
WQP What is IUVA’s function in the drinking water treatment market?
Bolton: IUVA has worked closely with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the drafting of UV regulations in the UV Disinfection Guidance Manual and the Long-term II Surface Water Treatment Rules that will probably be issued in late 2005 or early 2006. In addition, IUVA has played an advisory role in the drafting of UV regulations in Germany, Austria, Canada and New Zealand. IUVA serves as a forum for many discussions of issues concerning UV disinfection of drinking water.
WQP What are some current regulatory reforms affecting UV applications in the drinking water treatment market?
Bolton: As mentioned above, the pending issuance of the EPA UV Disinfection Guidance Manual and the Long-term II Surface Water Treatment Rules will be a very important reform. These regulations are very favorable to UV, and in fact, essentially designate UV disinfection as a “best available technology.”
